Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by GRACE you have been saved, through FAITH—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.”
You are already an overcomer from any and every sin you currently struggle with, IF you believe in the blood of Jesus Christ. You may be wondering, “How can I be free, or an overcomer, if I just slipped up and fell into that sin just last night? It’s simple:
“For if any person be in Christ, they are a new creature, old things pass away and all things become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
“Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? …. Such of these things you were, BUT you were washed clean, sanctified and justified by the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
You aren’t an overcomer because you’ve disciplined yourself to the point where you haven’t committed that particular sin in x amount of time (because that would be a work that you can boast in, and if you were to fall into that sin again, then because you were working in self-righteousness, that would in a sense, tarnish the deliverance that you’ve worked so hard for). BUT you are rather an overcomer simply because God spoke it over your life after you put your faith in his only begotten son, and because you believed and received it. And because God cannot lie, no matter how many times you fall into that sin, you are still an overcomer. No, you are not a hypocrite in God’s eyes when you fall into sin, if you are actually putting in an effort to stop sinning. He knows your heart. And God sees you as the victorious person he has called you to be, not as the struggling person you seem to be right now.
Deliverance is actually ALREADY COMPLETED in you BY THE WORK OF CHRIST on the cross. BUT, it is KEPT by you, when you make a DAILY decision, to deny yourself of your own selfish lusts and desires. You are to be delivered from sin daily, by crucifying the flesh thru self-denial… And because you are still capable of backsliding or falling into sin at any given moment (because you are still in this fleshly body), it is only possible to be kept thru the grace of God. Hold on to the deliverance God spoke over you. You are already free, if indeed the Son of Man has made you free, but you just have to walk in it daily, by denying yourself when the tempter comes, and by fighting the good fight of faith.
The Holy Spirit will keep you if you submit to him in obedience. (Galatians 5:16 says, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.) The Word of God will cleanse you of dirty thoughts and desires if you read it, meditate on it and apply it. (Psalms 119:9 says a young man keeps his ways pure by taking heed to the word of God: hiding the word in his heart that he may not sin against God.) And Praise will free you, if an unclean spirit or your flesh tries to oppress you or tempt you to give in to sin. For God dwells in the midst of his people’s praise (Psalm 22:3, KJV), and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17, KJV).
If you ask me, “How did you overcome such and such sin?” My answer to you would be, “I overcame because I have faith that God made Christ, who knew no sin, to become the offering for my sins, so that I could be made the righteousness of God through Christ.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) I am able to maintain my deliverance because I make daily decisions to deny myself of my selfish lusts and desires, in order to please God as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to the Lord as my reasonable service. (Romans 12:1) I am free because I know the truth, the teachings of Christ Jesus, and it has set me free. (John 6:31-36) It doesn’t mean that I can’t or won’t ever fall into that act of sin again, because it is very well possible, but by the grace of God, I make a daily decision to trust God to keep me from falling, and by that same grace, even if I do fall, I am covered by the blood of Christ, I’m justified, and if I confess and repent from my sins, God will be faithful and just to forgive me of my sins and cleanse me of all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
I am delivered of sin, not because I stopped sinning, but because God said I am delivered of sin, and I believe in the Word of God! And by my faith and obedience, I see the manifestiation of my deliverance taking root in my life.
