I read this in a pamphlet and it was a blessing to me. Thought I’d share.
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)
Living in the past is an insidious disease that eats away the present and takes away the future. Living in past accomplishments is a mental pride that glories in yesterday. Living in past failure is a mental flogging that continues the pain. Both look back instead of forward and paralyze spiritual growth.
The Apostle Paul did not have mental block regarding his past. More than once he described failures and accomplishments. But he chose not to live there. God had placed a heavenward call on his life where an eternal prize awaited. So Paul strained toward and pressed on toward the future.
So, thank God for the “Good Ole Days”, but don’t live there. And thank God for the forgiveness of past sins by the work of Jesus on the cross. Then, with your eyes on the prize, press on. God is at work in your life today! And, for the believer, tomorrow is always better than yesterday.
Father, we thank you for your work in past accomplishments and we thank you for forgiving us of past failures. Help us to have a heavenward calling like Paul. And help us to press on.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
