The Bible says that the just shall live by faith (Hebrews 10:38). Then it goes on to say that faith comes only by hearing, and by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). So you can’t say you are moving or doing something in faith if you have not received a word from God.
For example, when Abram left his country, to travel to the promised land, he didn’t just get up and go looking for the land on his own accord. God spoke to him and told him to “GO FORTH… to the land which I will show you…” Since he received a word from God first, we can say he was moving in faith. (Genesis 12:1-4)
When Peter stepped out of the boat, he didn’t initially step out on the WATER, he stepped out on the WORD. In other words, Peter didn’t just decide to walk out on the water on his own accord. He sought Jesus first and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” And after Jesus said, “COME,” that’s when Peter stepped out on the water. Since he received a word from God first, we can say he was moving in faith. (Matthew 14:22-29)
When Moses and the children of Israel were standing near the Red Sea, they didn’t try to devise a plan on their own to get across the sea. It was the Lord who had swept the sea back by a strong wind and commanded them to walk across the sea on the dry land. Because there received a word from God to go across the sea, we can say that they were moving by faith. But when Pharoah and his chariots and horsemen tried to walk across the same dry land without inquiring of the Lord, the sea closed up on them and swallowed them. (Exodus 14)
Many of you are trying to go to college, get married, move to another location, buy a new house or car, start a business or ministry, etc, but you haven’t inquired of the Lord first, and you’ve been noticing that all of your plans are coming up short. Every door is closing on you. You are being unsuccessful, and it seems like you aren’t getting anywhere. If you don’t want to experience failure in life, inquire of the Lord to see what He wants you to do. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Lean not on your own understanding, but acknowledge him in all of your ways and let him direct your steps.”
When you are led by God in the things you do, you will be successful. But you can’t just make a move in your own power or will without receiving a word from God to back up what you’re doing. That’s not moving in faith. That’s moving in your flesh….. And furthermore, you can’t move on a word that God gave to someone else. That’s dangerous. Just because it worked for them, doesn’t mean it will work for you. Look at what happened when the Egyptians tried to stand on the word that God gave to Israel–They drowned.
Jeremiah 10:23
LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
Jeremiah 42:3
Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”
Isaiah 30:21
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
