Gifted But Not Anointed

Some of you all have the gift to sing. Some of you all have the gift to dance. Some of you have the gift to prophecy or to reveal knowledge. Some of you all have the gift to preach and teach. But the GIFT means nothing without the ANOINTING. Come on, somebody! I feel the fire of the Holy Ghost!!! It is the anointing that destroys the yokes, not the gift! Without the anointing, all you’re doing is putting on a show, entertaining the people and getting them in their emotions. But it is the anointing that brings the deliverance!

When David, who had been ANOINTED by the Prophet Samuel, played the harp in the presence of King Saul, Saul got delivered from an evil spirit that was tormenting him. David just wasn’t playing the harp because he could play, or because he wanted to show off his talent. He was playing the harp strategically because he knew that the anointing on his life would be able to destroy the yokes of bondage off of the King.

Those of you who sing in the choir; those of you who dance on the praise team, those of you who whoop and holler behind the pulpit, WHERE IS YOUR ANOINTING?!

God wants to give you his anointing so your gifts can have some real power behind it! Don’t let your gifts cause you to become arrogant, prideful or puffed up in yourself. Humble yourself before the presence of the Almighty God. Humble yourself like the shepherdboy, David, so you can be endowed with the anointing of God! I speak this to you prophetically: When you develop a genuine heart for God’s sheep and aren’t just using your gift for personal vainglory,  that’s when God is going to release the oil to be poured out over your head!!!! Get your heart in position!

    1. I believe anyone can be gifted in the natural (singing, dancing, acting, speaking, architect, etc.) and not have a relationship with God. We see this in Hollywood all the time.

I also believe you can be gifted spiritually and not have a relationship with God. Many would use Romans 11:29 as a Scripture reference to back up this claim, which states: “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.”

Many would interpret this verse to mean that you can be gifted to prophecy, heal, speak in tongues, etc. even if you are still an unbeliever, have not repented of your sins nor have a relationship with God. However, this is not true because you can’t receive these spiritual gifts except if you have the Holy Spirit. For these are gifts that God gives to members of the Body of Christ. Not only that, but this verse is not referencing spiritual (nor natural) gifts. This verse is speaking specifically about the gift of salvation.

When the Scripture says “Gifts come without repentance”, in this context it means that God won’t change His mind about the blessings and promises he has for Israel (namely salvation). This promise will not be revoked no matter how deeply Israel sins in rejecting faith in Christ as the Messiah. God will always call Israel back into relationship with Himself, even bringing the people of the nation to faith in Christ in due time.

But a few Scriptures that I would say can be properly applied to the fact that you can have a spiritual gift without a relationship with God is in the example of the Pharaoh’s magicians (miracles/Exodus 7:10-12), Simon the Sorcerer (miracles/Acts 8:9-25), and the woman with the spirit of divination (knowledge/prophecy/Acts 16:16-18). None of these individuals had a relationship with God but they all used dark magic, spells and demonic power to mimic the gifts God gives. But their powers and gifts were perverted.

We have to be careful to discern if a gift comes from God or from Satan. Satan can masquerade and imitate very well.

  1. the anointing is when god empowers one to do what he wants done, not what man wants done. the holy spirit determines who, when, and where the anointing will take place. it cant be earned, bought, or deserved.

    1. Amen. Simon the sorcerer wanted to buy the power of the Holy Spirit but Peter rebuked him. The anointing of the Spirit is not something you can buy or earn. It’s a gift given as God sees fit.
